DESCRIPTION
Overall this is a 100% true and accurate, yet horrifying, account of how Thai police officers, together with their Arab accomplice, criminally conspired to extort a large sum of money from a British man - the principal character whom I have named Sly - and when he refused to bow to their demands they ensured that he was charged and convicted so as to facilitate their receipt of large cash rewards.
What happened during his residence at the various prisons he occupied in Thailand, all but beggars description, but every effort has been made to reveal, through his own eyes, what he witnessed, experienced and was exposed to every day of the torturous 17 years of his confinement. That he managed to survive with relatively sound body and mind is a miracle in itself.
Over the 17 years that Sly was a guest of His Majesty the King of Thailand he fought for his life and freedom; refusing to be bullied into accepting guilt by those who should have been helping him. During that period he earned himself the unenviable record of being the longest serving western foreign prisoner to have ever been afforded that royal privilege. The British FCO admitted to his UK lawyers in 1998 that they were aware of his innocence, and that he had suffered a major travesty of justice, but they did nothing to assist him in any manner to have the conviction overturned or retried.
Regardless of the inference that might be drawn from all that has been exposed within the more than 330 pages of this gripping story, considerable effort has been made to present the facts in a balanced perspective, while at the same time digging deep into underlying foundations so as to help the reader understand (a) The simple-mindedness of Thai society in general, and hence, some of the dangers associated with travelling to, doing business and living in that country. And (b) The lengths to which British government bureaucrats will go, regardless of international and their own national laws, in their self-interest quest to manipulate the outcome of events in their favour.
